Discover more about the faces behind our deals! This showcase: Capital Markets Associate Matt Reder.

Matt received his BS from Virginia Tech, where he studied Finance and Real Estate. He brings a solution-oriented mindset, a client-focused attitude, and is readily adaptable. We are very glad to have him on our team!

What initially drew you to a career in the commercial real estate world/how did you end up at Colliers?
I was studying abroad in Prague as a finance major my junior year of college. While abroad, I made a friend that was a Real Estate major who suggested that I look into adding real estate as a second major. I took him up on his advice, spoke with my academic counselor, and added real estate as a second major while abroad. This was one of the better decisions I made while in university by far. When I graduated in May of 2020, I began my career in real estate working in property management. I made a few detours in underwriting before I stepped into the world of brokerage with Colliers in late 2023.

Outside of work, do you have any hobbies or interests that complement or enhance your professional life?
I am an avid golfer. The game of golf continues to show me that you can have a flawless plan, execute the plan, and still fail. The ability to accept that bad breaks happen without letting them shake my confidence is a trait that has greatly enhanced my career.

What do you find most rewarding about working at Colliers/in CRE?
For the first time in my career, I can see the direct results of my efforts, and it has been extremely rewarding. Having an office full of highly respected and experienced professionals drives me to exceed the high standards that they have set.

Looking back on your career journey so far, what advice would you give someone who is just starting out in CRE?
As cliché as it sounds, don’t be afraid to fail. While none of us seek failure, we all will come face to face with it. Managing our reaction to failure and seeking to understand why we failed is pivotal for future success. Calling it quits, throwing in the towel, and giving up are sure fire ways to ensure misery and despair in real estate and life in general. “Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts” -Winston Churchill
