What initially drew you to a career in the commercial real estate world/how did you end up at Colliers?
What drew me to a career in commercial real estate was the ever-changing nature of the industry and the chance to make a real impact on businesses and communities. Industrial real estate caught my attention because of its critical role in supply chains, manufacturing, and the economy as a whole. CRE is one of the few careers where every day is different; new challenges, new opportunities, and a wide range of clients and projects that keep things exciting. I enjoy working through the complexities of deals and helping clients find spaces that help solve their problems and truly support their success. What drew me to Colliers was how its values align with the way I approach my work. The focus on being enterprising, the collaboration, and building meaningful relationships makes the company stand out. Colliers emphasizes expertise, and doing the right thing for clients, colleagues, and the community, creating an environment where you can grow and make a genuine impact. It’s been an ideal place for me to develop as a broker while helping clients succeed.
What is the key to building a great work environment?
A mentor of mine in the industry, Ralph Egerman, always says, “It takes a long time to make old friends.” That’s something that’s stuck with me, it highlights how important building strong, lasting relationships is; something I’ve found to be invaluable in this business. In commercial real estate, especially in a close-knit market like Pittsburgh, relationships are everything. Everyone knows everyone here and working together with colleagues, clients, and industry partners is critical to driving success and maintaining a good reputation. Open communication and a shared commitment to excellence are essential for creating an environment where people can and will thrive. In a market like Pittsburgh, where relationships span a lifetime, having a strong culture means genuinely caring about each other’s success and working together to achieve common goals (solving problems for our clients). When you combine that sense of purpose with a positive attitude and deep respect for the community, it creates an atmosphere where everyone is motivated to bring their best to the table every day.
Looking back on your career journey so far, what advice would you give someone who is just starting out in CRE?
Something you will learn very quickly, this career is like a rollercoaster – if you don’t enjoy the ups and downs, then you might want to find a different ride. But if you do, it can be a lot of fun and incredibly rewarding. The path in commercial real estate is never linear, and the challenges you face today can turn into the opportunities of tomorrow. Like a rollercoaster, you need a strong base to handle the twists and turns. Build that foundation with solid knowledge, strong relationships, and resilience. Always stay patient and persistent. Relationships are everything, so invest in them, even when it feels like you’re not seeing immediate returns. Focus on learning, staying humble, and finding mentors/colleagues who can help guide you through the unpredictable journey. Enjoy the ride and remember, not everyone likes the thrill of the ride – maintain your composure, stay steady, and you’ll be better equipped to navigate the ups and downs, no matter what comes your way.
