What initially drew you to a career in the commercial real estate world/how did you end up at Colliers?
I always love to hear how people get into the industry and the different paths that they take to get into CRE. Mine started out as a cold call, however, I was working with the Pittsburgh Pirates selling baseball tickets when I got a call back from the former managing director, where they asked, have you ever thought about getting into Commercial Real Estate? The rest is history, and I am forever thankful for that call.
What practices have you adopted to better your work ethic/success in CRE throughout your career?
This one is simple: in this industry, you get out what you put in. Staying up to date on what is happening in the market, building relationships with your clients, and getting creative / thinking outside the box for your clients have all been crucial for my success over the past 5+ years.
Outside of work, do you have any hobbies or interests that complement or enhance your professional life?
My wife and I recently had our daughter 9 months ago so when it comes to free time, there isn’t much of it these days. But nothing beats walking in through the front door and seeing your daughter with a big smile on her face and getting a big hug! No matter what sort of day you may have had at the office, your day instantly becomes better. She has taught me it is important to take a step back from time to time and really appreciate the important things in life such as family.
What is the key to building a great work environment/culture?
This will sound cliché, but great people. We have more of a family atmosphere here than a work atmosphere. Everyone gets along well and people genuinely enjoy being around one another. When it comes to working on different projects together, we want to help one another here and see each other succeed. A rising tide floats all boats!
Looking back on your career journey so far, what advice would you give someone who is just starting out in CRE?
Just focus on keeping your head above your feet. Focus on being the best version of your self in that moment and everything will fall into place.
