As featured in the Pittsburgh Business Times article, Pittsburgh is one of the most generous cities in the United States, based on a new study provided by Convio. Pittsburgh ranks 14th on a list ranking charity donations in 2009 among 273 cities with populations of more than 100,000. The report ranks the cities based on per capita online giving and on the total amount donated online.
Pittsburghers gave $2.7 million, or an average of $63.45 each, in 2009, compared with $2.55 million, or $73.30 each, in 2008. Despite a drop in average gift size in most cities, more than $284 million was donated by the 273 major cities in 2009, up from nearly $240 million in 2008. The rankings are based on the more than $921 million in online donations processed by Convio on behalf of thousands of nonprofit organizations during the calendar year 2009.
